Notching And Drilling Through Bottom Wall Framing Plates For Electrical And Plumbing Tutorial
www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/framing/index.html visit our website to learn more about plumbing, electrical and wall framing. Here's a helpful video about drilling holes through bottom wall framing plates and notching them for plumbing, electrical and heating. Keep in mind that examples used in video might be approved by other building inspectors, but not yours in your area. I can also say that I've never been on a job that did not pass inspection, because there where to many holes or notches in bottom of wall framing plates, but have when drilled through top plates.

    I have stayed in some Public Use A Frame cabins and did not care for them at all. They felt very small inside especially in the loft. You have to sleep on the floor. No head room. Difficult to furnish. The ones I do like have a conventional room added to each side or had short vertical walls.

    My friend had me check under his house after an HVAC tech told him there was a small water leak down there. One of the things I found was a floor joist that had been completely cut out in 2 different places (see my profile pic) for the toilet and bathroom sink drain pipes. He had no idea it was like that. I don't know how no one ever fell through his bathroom floor.

      @@gregvancom I would still be interested in seeing one though. For weekend warriors like myself, connectors have a second purpose. They're often the extra pair of hands we don't have vs working on a crew, and they help us avoid mistakes like positioning accuracy on layout. I think there would be a market for them even if they're totally overkill structurally as you're correctly pointing out

Another aspect related to exterior stairs: about the cement landing cement pad for exterior stairs, in order to meet the building code in Hawai'i, the part of the pad that will be walked on must measure least 3 feet out beyond the last tread.

    Have you ever tried to remove an exterior door by removing the pins? It’s not so easy. The barrel for the framing side hinge overlaps the flat part of the door side hinge about a 1/4 inch. You’ll need a pry bar strong enough to bend the hinge barrel out of the way. When the door is open taking the pins out to remove the door is no problem and quiet.

  • @mlthornton1

    Dumb question here. Say you're framing an 8 foot section. Then your studs will be at 16, 32, 48, 64, 80 and 96 OC. Since that last stud is at 96 OC if you put it on center it would extend 3/4" past the top and bottom plates. In that case do you shift the stud back 3/4" so that it stays flush within the top and bottom plates?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom 5 днів тому

      Yes, framing spaces between wall framing studs can be smaller than 16 inch on center spacing.

    • @mlthornton1
      @mlthornton1 5 днів тому

      @gregvancom thanks for this. Then when you start another section, should there be a 15.25" gap before placing another stud? That is, the next connecting section would not have a stud that lines up with the top and bottom plates to start but instead the first stud gets shifted over by 15.25" so as to resume the 16" oc?

    Super helpful! Thanks for posting this. Our city of Calgary Alberta had a main feeder water main break on early June 2024 and all citizens of Calgary have been asked to conserve water. One great idea that came out was to catch the cold initial tap water in a bucket while waiting for the running water to warm up which usually wastes about 2 L of water, then using that cold water to water plants or to flush the toilet. I knew you could flush the toilet but I wasn't sure how until I saw your video so thank you again

    How do you tell between condensation versus a leak?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom 5 днів тому

      This is not always easy to answer. Moisture can hang around for hours, but often goes away when temperatures from inside and outside start to become closer to the same. Where a plumbing water leak will keep leaking. Maybe turn the water off to your house and see if it keeps leaking to see if it's a plumbing problem.
